As a wedding and elopement photographer in the PNW I understand how meaningful the small details can be. One of my favorite ways to preserve those small but significant elements is through a wedding detail flat lay—a beautifully styled photograph of your wedding accessories, stationery, and keepsakes.
To help you prepare, here’s a guide to assembling a wedding detail flat lay box that reflects your unique love story.

Why a Flat Lay Matters
A flat lay is more than just a pretty picture; it’s a curated snapshot of your wedding day’s essence. By thoughtfully including items like your invitation suite, rings, and personal accessories, you’re creating a visual narrative of items that are truly memorable to you for your wedding day.
What to Include in your Flat Lay Box
Stationery and Paper Goods
- If you have a full invitation suite you can include that- RSVP cards, invitations, envelope, or save the dates
- Vow books if you’ve written your vows in advance

Rings & Accessories
- Engagement ring & wedding bands, along with the ring box or trinket dishes
- Jewelry – necklaces or earrings you or your partner may be wearing
- Hair accessories – combs, crowns, or any other decorations you may be using in your hair

Personal Touches
- Perfume or cologne
- Garter
- Heirloom pieces like a locket or pocket watch

Floral Elements
- Boutonniere or bouquet
- Ask your florist for some small loose blooms to include in your flat lay

Wedding Outfit Details
- Veil
- Tie or bowtie
- Cufflinks
- Shoes
- Wooden hangers for hanging your dress or suit from

Tips for a Seamless Flat Lay Session
- Organize ahead: Put your items in a separate shoebox or bag readily available for your photographer when they arrive
- Coordinate with your florist and ask them in advance for loose blooms
- Let your photographer know which items are the most significant to you and are the most important to be photographed; this is a great guide to get you started with ideas but if you have less time for details photos make sure your photographer knows which details are the most important to get photos of
By thoughtfully curating your wedding detail flat lay box, you’ll have beautiful images to look back on and share for years to come. These photographs become timeless keepsakes, reflecting the love and care you’ve invested in every aspect of your wedding or elopement day.
